The Southcentral Foundation Employee Family Center supports a family-friendly work environment for an organization that values “family as the heart of the Native community." The facility is an on-site, community-oriented, culturally-sensitive childcare center that serves Southcentral Foundation employees and their families. The facility offers a nurturing atmosphere where children can grow to their fullest potential. Natural light is essential to healthy development in early childhood.

As a result the building is designed and orientated to capture as much sunlight as possible during the dark winter months. A large overhang, along the south and west elevations, provides shade and prevents excessive heat gain during the long summer days. In addition, the design incorporates oversized exterior windows and interior corridor windows, which allow light to filter to the interior of the building. Colors, textures and patterns were selected from a natural palette to provide an environment that is familiar and inviting to all ages.
